Plein Air Painters “Hana Paint Out”

A number of LAS members ventured to Hana for up to six days of painting in mid-September. It was the 15th annual Plein Air Painters of Maui Hana “Paint Out”. In spite of several rain interruptions, a great time was enjoyed by everyone.

As always, the Hana community was very supportive of our efforts. We were welcomed onto private property, had a picnic at Hana Bay with local friends and musicians, and rounded out our stay with a stop in Keanae to paint, en route.

Participating LAS artists were Karen Camara, Pamela Neswald, Jan Shaner, Koana Smith, Raleigh Timmons, and Margie Tyler. Also taking part were former LAS members Jan Bushart, Michael Clements, Annaleise Flemming, Joe Fletcher, and Cheryl McElfresh.
Huge mahalos to Karen Sheehan-Pell for holding down the gallery while the rest of us played hooky!

LAS Artists Recognized at Exhibit

Three LAS artists had work juried in to the annual Malama Wao Akua exhibition at Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao. The exhibit is a fundraiser for the East Maui Watershed Partnership. All art has to represent species of plants or animals endemic to Maui.

Ceramic artist Mary Anne Leigh, photographer David Schoonover, and painter Eleykaa Tahleh each had art selected to display in the gallery.

Mary Anne won the Juror’s Choice Award for 3-Dimensional art for her piece representing a Nene.

David won the Juror’s Choice Award for Photography for a picture of an endemic ‘Amakihi bird on an endemic and endangered Lobelia Grayana.

Eleykaa’s painting of a native bird on ‘Ohi’a Lehua graces the entry to the exhibit.
